(Well, Like the Demonology class I’ll accept students for 2 days, and then get this show on the road. Now all students will take the same introductory class, it’s just too much bother to make a individual thread for every year. Oh, one last thing; try not to post 800 word replies, it's unnecessary xD keep it short but interesting.) A certain mister Blaine Channing sat behind his desk within the potions classroom. His body was crouched over the table, in his hands a number of papers keeping all the relevant information about his students this semester. Potions had been taught at Hogwarts for as long as the school had existed, Blaine however had only joined the ranks of teachers 4 years ago when the old potions professor unfortunately had to retire from old age, or whatever reason he had given. Still, despite his relatively short time at the school Blaine were confident that he knew the names and faces of all the students he had taught the 4 years before. Likewise he expected them to know him, well, as much of him as he wanted them to know anyway. There was 5 minutes left until class would start, enough time for the slightly worn-down teacher to ensure everything was in place. The classroom was as candle-lit and sunlight deprived as expected of a classroom found in the dungeons of a possibly millennium old castle. Rows upon rows of desks and chairs were lined up throughout the classroom with enough space for books, ingredients and the cauldron and whatnot.

but i broke the mold somehow He was awful at Potions.
No, it wasn't because he was stupid.. he was actually quite intelligent, mind you, but it was just.. he tended to crack under pressure. Potions was one of those things for him where, if you even snapped at the poor kid to hurry up and make the damn thing he'd probably make a mess by dropping ingredients out of pure fright.
He'd tripped down the stairs earlier unfortunately, leaving him looking slightly ruffled but otherwise perfectly alright. He wished he could say the same for his stomach; it felt as if butterflies were dancing about, their light wings brushing against his insides. Attempting a brave face he walked into the classroom, the shadowy dungeon devoid of sunlight though there were candles scattered about, lighting the room the barest amount possible so you weren't stumbling over the legs of tables or chairs.
Kaiden spotted the teacher over at his desk and he cleared his throat softly, attempting to get his attention, being the first to class. He knew this teacher, true; he had him last year. "Good day, Professor," the Hufflepuff murmured softly, deciding to take a seat in the middle desk of the classroom. He always had trouble with this class, mostly because, when it came to patience, Icarus Bradshaw had none. The youth let his ruby eyes sweep the room, taking in the fact that he wasn't the first to arrive, though he was, in fact, the second. A trend, it seemed, for the classes he was taking today. The raven-haired youth paused for a brief moment, waving at his Professor. Channing was pretty laid-back, and it made the already difficult subject of Potions seem at least a little easier to him. It'd suck if they had someone breathing down their backs all the time. He was about to head back to sit in the back of the class when his eyes lit on the brunette that had sat with him in Demonology. For a brief instant Icarus considered ignoring the young male, that was what he should have done. Instead the Gryffindor youth found himself setting his books down on the desk next to Kaiden. He found himself fighting the strangest urge, to shoot the green-eyed male a friendly smile of all things, and instead forced himself to give a grunt that may have been a greeting and a quick nod. Why... was he sitting next to this kid of all things? He glanced at Kaiden out of the corner of his eye, half wondering if the male was looking at him. He scolded himself instantly. Why the hell would it matter if the kid was looking at him or not? Christ, what was his freaking problem today? They skimmed over the various potion ingredients before pausing in front of a round glass bottle. Gently taking hold of the bottle, they pulled it off the shelf.
Then froze.
Sion looked sharply to the side, trying to see in the dimly lit dungeons. He was currently going through the potions cupboard for some dried billywig stings to replenish his stock, as he used them frequently in wideye potions. Technically, he wasn’t supposed to take them from the school, and he’d been hoping to get them before class began. It wasn’t uncommon for him to nick ingredients from the cupboards, and the teachers probably knew it, based on how much time he spent here. And Professor Channing would have to be a truly incompetent potions instructor if he didn’t notice unaccountable depletion of his stock. Still, Sion wasn’t too thrilled about the idea of being caught in the act.
Replacing the bottle and retrieving his mobile from his breast pocket, Sion frowned lightly at the glowing numbers. Three minutes until the start of class. So that was the professor he heard. He thought he had calculated the amount of time needed correctly, but apparently not. How sloppy. Tucking his mobile away, the Slytherin student decided that his only option was to walk nonchalantly out from the ingredients cupboard.
And so he did. He strode in breezily, as if he was blissfully unaware of the others in the room, whilst his eyes narrowed subtly and gave them a quick once-over. Professor Channing sorting papers at his desk; two younger students, a Hufflepuff and Gryffindor – not in his year, not in his house, therefore unnecessary to take detailed notice of. Class would be starting shortly.
Sion chose a seat slightly off-centre, close enough to the front to get the full effect of the lesson but not in the first row. The ingredients and instruments for the class were laid out already. Sion’s slender fingers couldn’t help but twitch with anticipation – or was that his lack of sleep acting up again? Either way, it was good to be back in class. Potion-making was like a second language to him.
Sliding easily into his seat, Sion lounged back, getting comfortable as he waited. He smoothed down his robes once before folding his hands on his lap and smiling complacently. Finally, a period of time during which he could make potions without breaking school rules. [/style]

Mikhail new absolutely nothing about the professor, or how he taught his class, and he had already decided it didn't matter. Short of his teacher being a frothing-at-the-mouth blood-racist, he was entirely confident that he'd get along just fine. Mikhail was, after all, a model student in classes like potions, and while he'd nearly failed every magical class, he'd gotten rave reviews from the potions teacher at his prep school. The words 'hard working' and 'extremely dedicated' end up on his glowing recommendation, and that had easily made up for his utter failure at any magical course. It wasn't that Mikhail was actually adept at potions or anything. No, he had no knack that let him prepare the most complex of potions with no trouble. He simply worked very, very hard at it. He stepped into the classroom with his potions book under one arm, but it was mostly for show. He'd already read it, and was fairly confident he could produce any of the ten most basic potions from memory. His other arm held the small cauldron, and he'd brought it despite being unsure if they'd even be doing any preparation today. It didn't matter - he was eager for the lesson regardless of it's content. The teacher seemed nice enough, and Mikhail gave a polite little 'Hello, Professor', barely audible as his eyes flicked around the classroom. Not the front row (only teacher's pets sat in the front row). Better not to sit alone, either, so his eyes settled on a Slytherin sitting not to far from the front, and he beelined over, taking a seat beside the boy. It wasn't that he was desperate for attention (far from it), but sitting alone in a classroom was begging for attention. Really, his first preference would be to sit with a Hufflepuff (good friends), or another Ravenclaw, but a Slytherin would have to do. The boy seemed to be a few years older then him too, so perhaps he could learn something. "Morning." He offered by way of greeting, accent lighting Russian as he set his cauldron out. "I'm Mikhail." His eyes flicked to the other boy, waiting for an introduction of his own.

Am I a part of the cure, Or am I part of the disease? Potions class, aka the best hour of Zeph's day. It was the only class that he could actually understood without really trying. Plus, it was easier to cause an explosion and blame it on a simple mistake in reading the directions. Zeph was one of the students who had attended classes run by the previous professor, so he could honestly say that Professor Channing was an awesome teacher. He wasn't strict or uptight like that last guy, and Zeph liked that from a teacher. It made the class a lot more relaxing. Despite a few "accidental" explosions, this was one of the few classes where Zeph wouldn't cause a scene out of boredom. He's never late, never sets off fireworks in the room, and never even siphons kissing concoction vapors into the air. So it was not, in fact, unusual that Zeph walked in a whole minute early. "Have a nice summer, professor? Hope ya' didn't miss me too much," He said with a sarcastic grin. At one point in his life, Zeph would have tried to keep to the shadows in the back of the room and try to hide the burn scar across his face with his hair. He used to avert his eyes every time someone looked at him, used to bow his head when a teacher called on him. But now, Zeph acted as if the twisted, deformed skin didn't even exist. People always stared, no matter where he went, but he really didn't care anymore. There weren't many people he knew in this class, and they were all younger students in different houses, so he fully expected to get at least a couple stares. Oh, wait. There was one Gryffindor. But Zeph hadn't ever talked to him before. He seemed like the quiet type, and those weren't any fun to befriend. So, he took a seat, closer to the front than the back, sat down comfortably and leaned back in the chair, letting iy teeter on the back two legs.

| OHKAY, NEXT TO CHARMS VLADIMIR ZETINA would much rather be in potions. Potions was not only more interesting then charms but also wasn't strangely being taught by the Headmaster himself. He didn't know why but that feeling just made him want to sit up straight like a good little boy. He walked into the class a second after the seventh year in front of him. As he stepped into the classroom he surveyed the room to study all of the people in it.
THERE WAS THE PROFESSOR, OBVIOUSLY, AND Vladimir ignored him for the moment. Then there was Sion, a slytherin fourth year. So far he was the only person in the class that Vladimir was acquainted with and that was only because they were in the same house. Still, Vlad had only spoken to him once. He noticed one more first year male and noted that he was a Ravenclaw kid. How annoying. There was a second year Hufflepuff and a third year Gryffindor. He noted their seats and then looked at the Gryffindor who had walked in before himself. He didn't stay too long on one person, only noting their seats and their houses. He had noticed the scar on the 7th year's face but didn't think too much about due to the fact that he didn't really care.
FINALLY AFTER A LITTLE DECISION MAKING Vladimir decided to sit right behind Sion in an attempt to stay close to his house. He glanced up at the boy from Ravenclaw but didn't dwell on the fact. He then looked down at his own robes in wonder about the rest of the day. Boy was he getting bored with it. He was almost tempted to start up some trouble just for the Hell of it and to get some excitement into the school. Still being new to the school as a first year Vladimir was searching for his idea of a 'group of friends.' He was also keeping an eye out for those students that he would completely hate and TRY to stay away from.
HE WAS ALMOST TOO ANXIOUS FOR THE CLASS to start and for his hands to have something constructive to do. He resisted the urge to pull out his wand and mess around with some new spells he had learned. Just for the reason of having something to to do. | TAG...channing, dawson, bradshaw, jenkins, usenko, lovegood || WORDS...390 || NOTES...none || MUSE...well you know how it is. :] |

The variety and potential it offered. To poison or to cure, to transform. It revolved around precision, with some instinct, compared to the hazier aspects of certain other subjects. In other words, he looked forward to this. The professor was still relatively new, yes, but Channing had been a decent teacher last year and there was reason that might have changed over the summer.
Stepping through the dungeon doors, he took a brief moment to survey the students who had already arrived, scattered throughout the room at their desks. There were a couple he recognized from last year or from an earlier class. As he passed the teacher's desk, he gave a stiff nod of greeting. Mentally he noted how the professor already looked a tad tired. That was odd, seeing as it was still one of the first classes of the year. That aside, Malakai turned his attention back to finding a place to sit. Somewhere reasonably close to front where he could observe what Channing did. His eye soon lighted on one, a first year in Slytherin who had also been in his last class.
Vladimir, if I'm not mistaken. The name had been bandied about in the hallways. along with something about Ravenclaw. He hadn't paid much attention to exactly what people found so interesting, but he still felt a faint sense of curiosity. "Hello," |

Students had started to fill the classroom now, alongside the one kleptomaniac 4th year Slytherin that had been thieving ingredients for years now. He probably ought to talk to him about it, but truth to be told he couldn’t care less. It wasn’t he who paid for the ingredients, but the school itself, and the fact that the boy went as far as to steal clearly meant he liked potions, and with the number of students clearly hating the dungeons Blaine almost enjoyed the fact he had a few followers who thought of his lessons as more than a nice excuse to blow up something and be able to put the blame on him rather than themselves. He was supposed to be looking after them, after all. “ Good day indeed” He did not look up from his papers to look at the second year hufflepuff; Kaiden, a clever boy he supposed, but not the canniest with the cauldron. Hardly surprising really, but Blaine was not one for playing favourites; he treated all his students equally either they could or could not avoid blowing up their brews. There, a first year arrived. He browsed through the papers until the boys face came up in a picture, Ah; Mikhail, ravenclaw, apparently skilled in the subject if the prep school teachers had cared to be honest in their reviews. Soon enough more students followed; a 7th year, that cocky Gryffindor that he half-grinned at “ Oh, I was about to keel over from the lack of explosions down here.” this was followed by a brief laugh. Now the classroom was partially filled and the time was there. “ I am Blaine Channing, your potion teacher. Now, let’s start with something simple; an antidote to common poisons.” With a swish of his wand every book opened to page 35. “ You will need your Mortar, cauldron obviously, a bezoar, 5 mistletoe berries, the standard potion herbs and one unicorn horn.
First you add one Bezoar to the mortar and crush it into fine powder, then add 4 measures of Bezoar into the cauldron along with 2 measures of the standard herbs. Heat it on medium heat/100 degrees for 5 seconds and then wave your wand. Then it needs to brew for 15 minutes.” he had moved in front of his desk now, half sitting on the edge as he watched them scurry along to get their stuff. This wasn’t an overly complicated potion, but since it was the first day, and first day of school even for some of them, he expected some accidents.

A few more students filed in after Mikhail, but one caught his interest more then others. An older Gryffindor with a vicious scar, and while he did his best not to let his eyes linger, they did anyway. A scar. A scar like that was vicious, violent, and most likely a burn. Mikhail's hand shifted, pressing against his stomach lightly, trailing along his own scar, neatly hidden away. A friend, then, if he had any say in it. Even if the other boy was older (what, sixth or seventh year? Mikhail couldn't tell), that wouldn't stop him from trying to talk, and his eyes followed the boy as he grabbed a seat somewhere behind him. Dammit, too far away to chat, but it was possible that they'd get partnered up another way. That was even more likely as two Slytherins took a seat behind him. He glanced around, eyes flicking from place to place, and he rapidly realized he was the lone Ravenclaw in the class. Fantastic. His train of thought was rapidly disrupted as the professor began speaking, head snapping to attention. He didn't even wait for the professor to finish speaking before he began. With a cauldron already on his desk, he reached inside it, pulling out his ingredient set and mortar. He didn't need instructions - it was an easy potion, with easy ingredients, and he could remember it without trouble. Of course, it didn't hurt that as he dropped the Bezoar into his mortar and started crushing, the professor was giving him instructions as well. Probably for the best. While the instructions matched up with what he remembered, a fresh reminder wasn't so bad as he went to work.

"Hello," he replied, slightly put out that the Ravenclaw hadn't provided his surname; he'd musch rather know that. But it didn't really matter, he supposed. The other boy also seemed to have a slight accent. Russian, he concluded, but from what region he couldn't be sure. "I'm Jenkins, Sion Jenkins."
Sitting up and turning to see if Mikhail had heard him, Sion saw that the other boy was staring off behind them a bit, an interested expression on his face. Curious. Sion glanced bback to see what he could be looking at. New students had filied into the room and were taking their seets. He couldn't be sure, but it seemed as if one of the older Gryffindor students had caught Mikhail's attention. At least, he assumed so - the sudent had quite a noticeable scar on one side of his face, and he seemed to be in the younger boy's direct line of vision.
Wanting to double-check, Sion looked back at Mikhail. Yes, he seemed to be staring in the Gryffindor's direction, but he couldn't be sure if that was what had caught his attention. But - Sion narrowed his eyes - the Ravenclaw seemed to be distractedly running his fingers down part of his midsection. The first conclusion that jumped to the Slytherin's mind was that Mikhail had seen the scar and was reminded of a scar of his own - hence the unusual, absent-minded rubbing of the stomach. Interesting. Still, he couldn't be certain without more data. He wouldn't need to use legilimency to figure something like this out, though.
His thoughts were interrupted by Professor Channing. Sion instantly focused on the front of the room, fingers folding in front of him, but his excitement level fell slightly when he heard the words "antidote to common poisons." Oh, he'd done this one plenty times before. Simple almost to the point of boring. At least, if he didn't like potions as much as he did, it would be. As sson as the professor had finished the last of his instructions Sion was out of his seat, springing towards the ingredients cupboard. He wasn't going to let an overly-simple assignment put a damper on his mood. There was still something about the enjoyable, relaxing rhythm of crushing a bezoar that made the class worthwhile. | "Hello"
Vladimir looked over at the kid that sat beside him and in that split second studied what he could about him. Obviously it was Malakai Ryder. He too was a Slytherin house boy. Vlad also was sure that he was a second year. He seemed well kept and very smart, but just as pulled into himself as Vladimir was. Not really knowing how to respond Vladimir allowed the boy a small wave before the professor began to speak. Even if he did have time to say anything he wouldn't know what to say. So he turned to listen to the lesson.
His eye suddenly caught on the lone Ravenclaw. He wasn't sure why but he seemed... interesting. It was a quick thought before he thrust it to the back of his mind. Though it wasn't his usual ritual to dismiss data Vladimir ignored it anyway. Just the thought of Ravenclaw was enough to make him sick at the moment. Maybe he would think about it more later when this rumor stuff about him died down a bit. Hopefully it would soon.
As Professor Channing spoke Vladimir wasn't really inclined to laugh. He was more thinking about the students around him. Some of every class, house, and age. Some of them seemed intriguing while others gave off a vibe that told him that he should stay away. While others still just didn't really register in his mind.
When Professor Channing mentioned what should be done he sort of glanced around the classroom in slight confusion before noticing the pattern of everyone else. He quickly got up and followed their lead in getting supplies and necessities.
An antidote to common potions huh? That's easy enough. Not much challenge in it, but I guess he's trying to start us out pretty easy for us first years. Its probably a review type thing. He said as he came back down to sit at his seat with everything ready on his desk.
